Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act
The No Surprises Act is a federal law that protects you from unexpected medical bills. It applies when you receive care from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, or when you receive emergency services.
What You Need to Know
- You cannot be balance billed for emergency services, regardless of whether the provider is in-network or out-of-network.
- You cannot be balance billed for certain services at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center if you did not consent to out-of-network care.
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling non-emergency services.
Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate
If you do not have insurance or request an estimate for scheduled services, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate that shows the expected costs for services. You can request this estimate at any time.
How to File a Complaint
If you believe you have received a bill in violation of the No Surprises Act, you can file a complaint:
